AVOIDING THE TOP 3 INSURANCE CLAIM MISTAKES

Insurance claims are always a strenuous task. A roof insurance claim is no different. There are a lot of hidden dangers and loopholes that you need to be wary of. To get you started, here are the top three aspects of a claim that you need to focus on.

1. Inspection
The first and most important step that needs to be executed properly for an insurance claim is the site inspection. A professional roofing contractor like Paramount Roofing should be hired to ensure the thoroughness of the checkup, as they may be able to point out other issues that might be covered by your insurance. This way, you get the most mileage out of your insurance.

2. Documentation
For roof insurance claim approvals, it pays to study and understand the scope and extent of your insurance. Knowing what an insurance package will and will not cover saves you from the hassle of a rejected claim. Remember: any evidence of the damage in the form of documents or photographs can help you build a strong insurance case and will minimize the chances of your claim being rejected.

In the fortunate event that your claim gets approved, get everything in writing. This includes (and most especially) the damages confirmed by the contractor that the insurance adjuster may have missed.

3. Product Warranty
Check if any of the damaged parts can be covered under a product warranty instead. The difference between insurance and warranty lies greatly in the extent of the damage. A product is eligible for a warranty claim if it can be salvaged in any way, while insurance typically compensates for loss or irreparably. Cases that require an emergency leaking roof repair are most likely to be covered under warranty if proven to be a result of faulty roof manufacturing or installation.

METAL ROOFS AND CONDENSATION: A PRIMER

Although metal roofs are widely considered the quintessential low-maintenance roof, they’re not immune to condensation. This phenomenon occurs in all roofs, and it may surprise you that your steel or copper roof is suffering from this problem.

How Condensation Occurs
There’s a bit of science behind condensation, but what’s important are these two facts: warm air holds more moisture than cold air, while wet air is lighter than dry air.

Condensation on the roof happens at night when the temperature inside your home is warmer than outside. Warm air rises to meet the cold roof and cools. When this happens, the warm air sheds its moisture which then ends up as drops of condensation on the roof.

Other Sources
Keep in mind that this natural phenomenon of warm air rising to the cool roof isn’t the only source of under-roof condensation. It can also be due to poor drainage, unvented heaters or pools of water due to roof leaks.

Preventing Condensation
Although the prospect of a condensing roof may seem like a big problem, and it is when left unaddressed, the solution to it is pretty straightforward – ventilation and insulation. Natural ventilation can take the form of roof vents or even opening the windows in the attic space to circulate the wet air.

Insulation should ideally be installed during your first residential roof installation. It’s also important that you take note of how long your existing insulation has been in the roof so you can replace it. This works hand-in-hand with ventilation and keeps your roof from reaching the dew point.

Your roof is only as good as how well it’s installed and maintained. On your next roofing project, we recommend you reach out to a local roofing contractor such like Paramount Roofing. You can count on us to meet all of your roofing needs.

WHY IS YOUR ROOF LEAKING?

The causes of roof leaks are rarely unusual. Unfortunately, people often don’t know what these causes are. This can make their roof insurance claim more difficult to assess since they usually won’t be able to put the correct reason for the roof leak as the reason for their claim. Knowing the cause of your roof leak and being able to tell what it isn’t will make this process simpler.

Missing Shingles
Probably the most common source of roof leaks, missing shingles basically expose the rafters and underlay of your roof to the elements. And if you don’t conduct regular roof inspections, the chance that this missing shingle will go unnoticed until the problem becomes bigger is pretty high.

Flashing Issues
Improperly installed or damaged flashing will definitely cause leaks to spring from your roof and even from your siding. That’s because flashing covers exposed gaps where your roof meets another structure. Damaged roofs can re-expose this gap. Be sure to ask your roofing and siding contractors to double-check any flashing installation they make on your roof and siding.

Age
The age of your roof can also be a cause for your roof leaks. Some roofs are designed to work efficiently for a set period of time. They might also be exposed to frequent weather disturbances that affect the efficiency of the roofing material. Once your roof is past its service life, the material can start to become brittle, making it prone to chipping and cracking.

Blunt Force
Strong winds can uproot trees or structures surrounding your home and can cave in a section of your home, which might require heavy repairs that can involve your roof, walls and even the installation of replacement windows.

Low-Pitched Slope
Shallow roofing slopes are also a common cause of leaks, but not just because of pooling water. Shallow roofs expose the shingles to the risk of tear-offs due to strong winds. If a shingle gets torn off the roof during a storm, rainwater can enter through this opening and affect the material underneath the roof shingles.

HIGHLIGHTING THE ENERGY EFFICIENCY OF METAL ROOFS

Metal roofs are rising in popularity among homeowners not just because they serve as alternatives to other roofing materials like asphalt shingles and wood shakes. They are also considered green roofing solutions for their unmistakable quality: energy efficiency.

Cool Roofs
Apart from being resistant to fire and being impervious to pests and the ravages of Nature, metal roofs have energy-saving features that can help homeowners save on their energy expenses. Research backs this up—metal roofs have high solar reflective enough to reduce the effects of urban heat islands. The added coatings and finishes on these materials also influence the roofs’ ability to reflect heat off the home.

Conventional knowledge states that lighter colors tend to deflect heat more than darker ones. The same concept applies to metal roofs. It is the reason why such roofs coated with white or lighter-colored hues are often preferred. They not only reduce energy spending by 20 percent, but they also make the home 50 to 60 percent cooler than darker-colored roofs.

Durable, Weather-Resistant Roofs
Another reason to pursue metal roofing for a residential roof installation project involves the flexibility of the material. This distinct quality allows for easy installation of solar panels. These systems can even have attachments for this purpose.

Apart from being energy-efficient, metal is a low-maintenance roofing material. It doesn’t require as much upkeep, though it is still imperative to keep it well-maintained to ensure its longevity and performance. Such a roof can expect to last as long as a tile or slate roof, thanks to its exceptional durability and weather resistance.

At Paramount Roofing, our goal is to give you complete satisfaction for the services we offer. Whether it is a residential or commercial roof repair or installation, expect our professionals to deliver.

When to replace your home’s roof and gutters

When to replace your roof
Thinking of getting a new roof or new gutters? With the summer season, you might worry that it’s too late to start outside home repair, however, depending on your needs, now may be the perfect time.

How soon you schedule a new roof depends on the issues you’re having with your current one. Planning ahead for a new roof before it becomes an urgent situation is recommended in order to avoid the stress of an unexpected roof replacement. So, if your roof is at least 20 years old, or you notice cracked, curled or bald spots on your shingles, now is a great time to plan for its replacement. However, if you’ve been repairing your roof repeatedly or experiencing leaks in multiple areas, then you probably already have an urgent need for a new roof and may not be able to wait for a particular time of year.

Winter is one of the more popular times to install a roof. During the winter season, homeowners look forward to a new roof to provide improved insulation during the approaching winter, and protection from the weather. Some roofs must be installed before it gets so cold that the material won’t adhere or dry. And it depends upon the type of roof: flat roofs, rubber and special materials adhere better in the sunny months, but steep slope or angled roofs, like most residential homes, that have asphalt, metal, tile or slate materials are fine to install in colder months.

When Should You Replace Your Gutters?
The most economical time to replace your gutters is when you are installing your new roof. Many roofing companies offer a “package” price when you buy both. But if a new roof is not in your plan, and your gutters are rusted, cracked or bent, you may need to replace the gutters soon. Gutters serve the important purpose of keeping water runoff from getting under the shingles on the roof, which can rot the precious sheathing underneath; and away from the siding and foundation of your house.

For this reason, damaged gutters should be replaced before the wet season, so you are not sacrificing your homestead by allowing the rain runoff to spill out the sides of the channels. You may be able to replace certain sections of the gutter, but if too much damage exists, you’ll need to install a complete gutter system to protect your home from water damage.

Top Reasons to Invest in New Insulation This Season.

Having a well-insulated home brings many meaningful benefits, which is why investing in new insulation is a great idea.

Return on Investment
When properly installed, insulation can significantly increase your home’s energy savings, especially if you live in an older home. Other than significantly boosting your energy efficiency, good insulation can also increase your home’s overall value. You can expect to recoup a huge percent of your investment.

Improved Comfort
Does your home become uncomfortably warm in the summer and chilly in the winter? Having an improperly insulated attic may be contributing. Proper insulation promotes the circulation of air in your attic, creating a desirable interior climate while also improving your roofing system’s service life.

Environmental Responsibility
Insulating your attic not only benefits your home but the environment as well. Good insulation reduces the amount of energy your home consumes, resulting in less carbon emissions. The attic is a great place to start, as up to 25% of your home’s energy can be lost there.
